Welcome to the Internal Medicine Unit at the Costa del Sol University Hospital
We have created this space with you in mind, aiming to provide a concise overview of our department, introducing our team and the activities we carry out.

Internal Medicine is the medical specialty that provides comprehensive care for adult patients, covering everything from prevention to treatment of diseases, follow-up of chronic conditions, rehabilitation, and palliative care. We are particularly focused on patients with multiple health conditions, always working with a holistic view of the person rather than isolated diseases. Our scope of work is primarily hospital-based.

In our department, you will find a highly qualified and committed team of professionals: more than half of our physicians hold doctoral degrees, many are accredited by the Andalusian Agency for Healthcare Quality, and actively participate in numerous hospital committees and quality programs.

We are also deeply engaged in postgraduate teaching, as Internal Medicine is essential as a foundational specialty for many other medical fields. We also participate in undergraduate training for medical and nursing students from the University of Málaga (Department of Medicine) and host students from the European Erasmus program and South American universities. Our department carries out its own research and also participates in multicenter projects, collaborates in randomized clinical drug trials, and contributes to national and international registries. Our staff actively engage in the work of various national and international scientific societies.

The Internal Medicine Department at the Costa del Sol University Hospital was accredited by the Andalusian Agency for Healthcare Quality (ACSA) in 2016 and again in August 2022 at the advanced level, and in December 2022 at the optimal level. We received the “SEMI Excelente” Accreditation in 2018 and won the Best in Class Award for Best Internal Medicine Service in Patient Care that same year. These certifications recognize our high-quality approach to medical problems and excellent, consistently maintained care outcomes.

Achieving the ACSA’s Optimal level of accreditation means that every aspect of our care is designed to offer you safer and higher-quality attention. Our team works according to the best available scientific practices, constantly updating our knowledge to ensure that you always receive the most appropriate and up-to-date care, minimizing risks and complications. Our practice is patient-centered: we listen to your needs, respect your decisions, and personalize your care, because we believe that the best medicine adapts to the person, not just the disease.

This accreditation also reflects our strong commitment to continuous improvement: we regularly evaluate our work to identify areas for progress and growth. And, of course, it means we strive to ensure that all patients can access our services without barriers, adapting our spaces and communication to guarantee inclusive, dignified, and respectful care for everyone. Therefore, this accreditation (which we maintain over time) is not only a recognition of our work but also a guarantee for you.

From our unit, we provide care through inpatient hospitalization, both in-person and virtual outpatient consultations, a medical day hospital, and specific programs such as our Heart Failure Program, infectious disease care, management of frail patients, and coordination of infection control.
